Messineo Art Projects and Wyman Contemporary are pleased to present publicly for the first time the conceptual photographic work of Spanish artist Gema Alava, who is known for her site-specific installations. The work will be on view in a unique, intimate, gallery space at 227 West 29th Street, 4th Floor (# 111), Tues.-Fri 11-5, Sat. 12-5 and by appointment.

Working with simple materials such as nails and thread, Ms. Alava interprets the visual strength and conceptual capacity that such materials and tools have to communicate. Dealing with the concept of fragility, we are faced with simple but powerful compositions. This series of nine black and white photographs depicts the struggle between a nail and a thread, both anchored to the ground, culminating in an exhausting performance. Working with the idea of tension, and continuing her investigation of the relationship between strength and vulnerability, Alava confronts the viewer with the question: are we faced with the record of an installation or with the work in its entirety?

This exhibition is made possible in part thanks to the support of The Consulate General of Spain in New York.
