Robert Stivers: Unknown Work

Messineo Wyman Projects is pleased to announce our second exhibition of Robert Stivers' work, shown salon style at 525 West 22nd Street, suite 5D. Hours are Wednesday through Friday afternoons from 12-5pm, and by appointment.

Robert Stivers' out- of-focus approach to photography could be described as sculptural. Stivers works his images in the darkroom, sculpting areas of light and dark, softening edges, and suspending his subjects out of context to produce an image closer to his own interior world.

With two distinct bodies of work, this artist continues to explore the figure through color as well as toned silver prints. Mr. Stivers is a product of the pictorialists of the past, but brings it forward to the 21st Century by demonstrating that human perception itself is not entirely consistent, as it tends to blur the areas of the field of vision. It is here that this artist shares the notion that "nothing in nature has a hard outline" as espoused by the English photographer, Peter Henry Emerson, in 1889. Mr. Stivers employs various technologies, such as exposures and solarization, as well as interventions in the printing process, shaping a reality out of his imagination.

Stivers' Figure In Prayer was recently aquired by the Brooklyn Museum of Art and is on view in their permanent collection. Additional works are included in the collections of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris, the Museum Ludwig in Cologne, and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Mr. Stivers has had two Artists' Monographs published: Robert Stivers' Photographs, 1997, Arena Editions, and Listening to Cement, 2000, Arena Editions.
